Activity and Wellness For A Healthy Tomorrow

Dear Hemophilia Community,

At Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc., we are committed to offering robust programs that enrich the lives of those living with hemophilia A. We hope that you can be secure in knowing that Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals will continue offering solutions to address real life needs of families in the hemophilia A community. One of the real issues we will work to address in 2009 is overall health and fitness in the hemophilia A community.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity is a health concern for adults, youth and children in the United States. Specifically in the hemophilia community, children with hemophilia are almost twice as likely to be overweight than their peers without hemophilia.1

In partnership with the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF), Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals is working to combat childhood obesity in the hemophilia community by offering programming focused on active and healthy lifestyles through the 2009 Team Hemophilia mobile tour. The tour will make stops at summer camps across the country to provide relevant and important youth programming aimed at increasing activity and encouraging proper eating habits. Our goal is to leverage the excitement and mobility of Team Hemophilia to teach children the importance of healthy living and to encourage them to get active!

We are leading another exciting initiative in 2009 to encourage fitness and active lifestyles through LivingWithHemophilia.com. Living Fit! A Joint Effort is developed in cooperation with the hemophilia community, professional physical therapists and physical educators to offer physical therapist-recommended tips for strength and resistance training for young people. It will feature interactive fitness guides as well as personal success stories in an effort to provide a user-friendly fitness experience that may be easy to follow in your own home.

Another exciting program to look for in 2009 is LINK. Facilitated by local Bayer HealthCare Hematology Account Executives, LINK programs are interactive and community-based forums for patients and caregivers to provide feedback and gain Learning, INsights, and Knowledge on real life issues. The LINK program also features a video tutorial on fitness and joint health.

Thank you for being a valuable member of the hemophilia community. We welcome continued feedback and input from you as we grow and develop 2009 programs. Please visit www.KogenateFS.com to receive email alerts with new information and program updates throughout the year.

We resolve to provide you with important health and fitness information in 2009, and we encourage each of you to participate with us in one or more of these programs to live healthy and fulfilling lives.

Sincerely,

Paul Bedard
Vice President, General Manager Hematology

Answers to questions about Self-InfusionAnswers to Questions about Self- Infusion

By Susan Gamerman, RN

"Start early" is a mantra you hear from Hemophilia Treatment Centers when it comes to teaching your child with hemophilia to take responsibility for his own healthcare. This includes an early start of the transition to self-infusion by your adolescent. However, I still find that the decision about when to make the transition is a process that differs from family-to-family. New families I talk with often acknowledge they'll eventually work towards wanting their child to be self-sufficient and doing their own infusions. But the question that often comes up is "how young is too young to self-infuse?"

I suggest families look for upcoming opportunities. Planning your calendar, you might see school trips or travel plans that will take your child away from home. The months leading up to these events can provide a good time to make this important transition towards independence. Self-infusion can be a life-changing and liberating event that raises a child's self-confidence and promotes autonomy.

Questions I sometimes get asked by parents contemplating the transition include:

  • How do I know if my child is ready?
  • Is it okay to have my child practice on me?
  • How can I get my child more interested in self-infusion as an option?
  • My child appears ready and wants to, but I'm filled with all these worries. What can I do?

I'm happy to have this opportunity to answer your specific questions about self-infusion. Just drop me a note using the form below and I'll post a reply on this page so the community can learn more about this important topic.

Susan Gamerman, MS, RN, PNP-BC works in the Hemophilia & Thrombophilia Program at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Her nursing career began in the intensive care unit. She soon discovered, however, the rewards of working closely with families and patients with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. One reason she enjoys the work is because she can follow the children as they grow up. Susan holds a Masters Degree as a pediatric nurse practitioner from DePaul University. She lives in Chicago.

Submit your question on self-infusion to Susan at LivingWithHemophilia.com.
